Thesis/Dissertation Advice
Some tips to make your life easier (writing a thesis or dissertation is HARD! - take advantage of all the help available).
- The editor reviewing your first submission will look at your references (Do they match your journal article?), Table of Contents (Is the format correct?, Is the "Outline" of the paper valid?), List of Tables and List of Figures (Have the manual adjustments been made?). If the answer to one or more of these questions is no, there is a good chance they will stop reviewing your document right there. If you can't do these four basic items correctly what reason do they have to believe that the rest of the document will be any better?
- Sign up for a Template Workshop the semester BEFORE you plan to graduate.
- Visit the Application Support Center and the Editorial Office well before the deadlines and ask questions. There's no reason to put graduation at risk because of a simple misunderstanding.
- Start organizing your references NOW! Whether you use a spreadsheet, reference management software, or just 3 X 5 index cards, have a list of everything you've read related to your subject in an organized format. Find a journal article with a reference style you like and start working in that format NOW! Trying to re-organize 200 sources the week before the deadline will generate more stress than you want to deal with.
- Backup, backup, and, oh by the way, BACKUP! With flash drives as cheap as they are today there's no reason not to have multiple copies of everything you will need for your document. Preferably in editable format not just pdfs.

Don't forget the Reading and Writing Center is a great resource to help you improve your writing skills.
"Save AS PDF" in Word 2007
The Microsoft "Save As PDF" download will NOT create an acceptable PDF for your thesis or dissertation. If you save the file to a new name or location all of the MS Word links break. You must have the full version of Adobe Acrobat to create a file that can be accepted by the Graduate School.
